Developing a Winter Running Collection: What Brands Should Specify
A winter running collection should begin with a use case, not a list of fashionable features. A club training range, a casual running line and apparel for exposed routes may need different products. A useful development brief explains the wearer, activity and conditions before asking the manufacturer to select materials.
Set the boundaries of the collection
Describe the main market, expected conditions and intended session type. Decide whether the range covers running itself, warm-up and recovery periods, or all three. Avoid presenting one jacket as suitable for every winter situation without defining and verifying its performance.
A focused range plan might include a long-sleeve top, an optional midlayer, running trousers or tights, and a light outer garment. This is an illustrative assortment, not a requirement to launch every category. Choose the pieces that support the brand’s main customer.
Write separate briefs for warmth and weather protection
State the purpose of each material and ask the supplier to propose specific swatches. For example, a soft inner surface, a stretch requirement and a wind-resistance target describe different aspects of a product. Do not treat fabric weight as a substitute for all three.
If a supplier proposes a water-repellent finish, ask exactly what claim it supports and what evidence is available. Do not label a finished jacket waterproof without verifying the relevant material and garment construction. Record the required care instructions and how any claimed performance will be assessed.
Design storage around actual running use
List what the wearer needs to carry and where. Test the chosen phone pocket with the intended device size and check movement during a wear trial. Review zip access, pocket opening and whether contents affect the garment’s balance.
Decide whether a hood, adjustable hem or additional ventilation is genuinely useful for the target product. Every feature adds development decisions. Request separate costing for optional elements so the collection can meet its intended price position.
Review fit and visibility details on samples
Test the jacket over the planned inner layer and review arm swing, sleeve length and hem movement. Check collars, cuffs and seam locations for comfort. For trousers or tights, assess waist stability and the placement of storage during movement.
If reflective details are requested, specify location and size and agree how they will be evaluated. Do not assume decorative reflective printing makes a garment certified high-visibility equipment. Any such claim requires appropriate verification.
Send a complete development brief
Use our running apparel range for style references, including the lightweight windbreaker. Identify the changes needed for your winter collection; existing references do not establish winter performance for a new design.
Prepare artwork, measurement charts, material preferences, quantities by style and colour, target sales market and delivery requirements. XMTSPORTS supports OEM and ODM sportswear development. Send your winter running project for a review of the specification and a tailored quotation.
