Woven vs Knitted Tracksuits: How to Compare Materials for Your Collection

Choosing between a woven and a knitted tracksuit is a product-development decision, not a simple quality ranking. Both can be considered for custom collections. The useful question is which specific material and construction deliver the intended silhouette, movement and appearance at the target cost.

Separate construction from fibre content

Woven fabrics are formed by interlacing yarn systems; knitted fabrics use interconnected loops. Polyester, nylon, cotton and blended compositions describe fibres, not whether a material is woven or knitted. CottonWorks’ weaving introduction provides background on woven construction.

Ask the supplier for the fabric code, fibre composition, construction, finished weight and any finish. These details are more useful than a request for “technical polyester”. A stretch requirement should also be stated explicitly rather than inferred from a material name.

Compare the silhouette on actual garments

For a crisp or lightly crinkled presentation, a woven sample may be a useful candidate. For a softer, more fluid set, a knitted sample may be worth comparing. These are starting directions, not guarantees: the exact yarns, structure, weight and finish affect the result.

Review jacket shape and trouser drape together. Check how the material folds at the waist, elbow and knee, and how it looks when seated. Use the intended fit rather than selecting fabric from a small swatch alone.

Specify movement instead of assuming stretch

Describe the activity and test the sample through relevant movements. Check reaching, bending and sitting, alongside the intended ease at the shoulders, hips and thighs. Record stretch and recovery requirements where they are important to the design.

Do not assume that every woven fabric is rigid or that every knit offers sufficient recovery. If the product requires a measurable property, agree the test method and acceptance criterion for the selected material.

Include lining and decoration in the comparison

State whether the jacket and trousers are lined, partially lined or unlined. Compare the complete proposed construction, including pockets, trims and inside finish. A lined garment and an unlined garment are not equivalent quotation specifications.

Trial the selected branding technique on each shortlisted material. Review print clarity or embroidery appearance, the reverse side and how the application affects the surface. Consider seam placement before approving graphics that span panels.

Request comparable quotations

Ask for two clearly labelled options against the same design brief, quantity breakdown and packaging requirement. Specify what differs between them. Compare complete set prices, sample costs and material availability rather than relying on fabric price alone.
